It was with great excitement that we accepted the opportunity to review The Cat of Bubastes audiobook from Heirloom Audio Productions. I have SIX amazing children, five of which still live at home. And every one of them is blessedly a voracious reader. But I am only one person. And I do not have unlimited hours to sit and read with them. So pretty young, we introduce them all to audio books. And some of them absolutely love them! I remember spending many hours in the van listening through entire book series with the children as we drove on errands on town days. Now, David (11) has grown to love audio books and devours them like air. When I was leaving town for our 25th wedding anniversary, I sent this one along with him to enjoy in our absence. As expected he absolutely loved it.
The Cat of Bubastes tells the story of Prince Amuba and his mentor, Jethro who are captured by Egyptians and enslaved in Thebes. Adapted from the book, The Cat of Bubastes, by G.A. Henty.
Here is what makes this product different from other audio books.
In addition to an engaging story with dramatic music and voices, this includes a downloadable study guide filled with interesting things to do.
The study guide included discussion questions for each chapter, extra historical information, making the book even more interesting. It also includes a section called: Expand Your Learning which gives additional details about specific elements of the book. It also came with a download of a printable poster- something we really don’t use, but if your child is into such things, it’s there.
I really have nothing at all negative to say about this story except that it could have gone on MUCH longer and David would have loved it.
Also included was a Bible study based upon the lessons from the book. This is very engaging for a boy David’s age and is a great source for family discussion, even if you don’t want to do the complete study. Finally, our review package included the download of the actual Henty book, including the beautiful pictures. Even though my son did not use it at this time, I believe I will use it in the future. Ebooks are becoming more and more popular here as our groaning bookshelves are demanding NO MORE ADDITIONS! Also, as I am aging, I am appreciating the fact that with ebooks I can adjust the word size for whatever is required for my eyes.
The content of this audio book is based upon historical events, meaning this book helps history truly come to life. And it is from the incredible story by G.A. Henty, This means that the story is told in such a way as to be God-honoring and always pointing to the ultimate sovereignty of God, so it reinforces what we are teaching in our homeschool. If you are on the fence about this, you should watch the trailer below to give you an idea of the voices and quality used in this production. It will give you a very clear indicator if this is something you and your children will enjoy.
