We have a sweet friend who makes her own sushi, so she kindly offered to come teach us how.
The Menu: Tuna Rolls, Smoked Salmon Rolls and California Rolls
Since we don’t eat a lot of sushi (it’s kinda pricey for us), we told her to make whatever she thought would be best, so she chose things that did not include raw meats. This made it easy and fun to include all the children in making and eating them without me being worried.
We started with a trip to Whole Foods to get the ingredients (meat and veggies) and she brought her own rice, rice cooker and Nori. Since then, I’ve discovered the Nori at whole foods comes in small packages (10) for a higher price than larger packages (50) elsewhere, so shop around if you have time.
The ingredients:
- Nori
- Sushi Rice
- Rice cooker or I used my Instant pot
- Rice Wine Vinegar
- Soy Sauce
- Siracha
- Cucumbers
- Cream Cheese
- Avocaro
- Wasabi
- Smoked Salmon
- Imitation Crab
- Canned Tuna
- Salt
- Sugar
- Cling Wrap
There are too many steps to describe here, but we found it very simple. She, in fact, learned from watching YouTube videos, even though this is a staple food in Korea.
We made several rolls, with all kinds of combinations from the foods we purchased. She purposefully chose simple, easy ingredients so that there would be nothing too “weird” for us. Since my kids had never had sushi, everything was new to them. Two of them very enthusiastically made the sushi, then chose not to eat it!
I used my instant pot to make the rice the next time we made this at home on our own.
