Where is the Heart of Your Home

Affiliate Disclosure

Most of my readers know by now that the heart of our home is the culmination of each member’s identity in Christ.  If each and every member of our home is living a life to be pleasing to the Lord, then the home will be a pleasant place, a place where we love one another, put one another’s interests ahead of ourselves, and are a testimony to the world of what a life filled with Christ’s love can do.  That, simply put is the heart of our home.

Now, from a worldly viewpoint, the other heart of our home is the living room, our “hub” so to speak.  Here is where we greet one another, snuggle on the couch to read books together, gather with our church family, have family discussions, and with our home businesses, we often have our laptops in there working while all the evening’s activities are going on around us.  Our living room is also the “sick room”.  When someone gets sick, the couch is the place they lay with their pillow and blankie so that they can be lovingly tended to by others, even as we go about our daily work.

This is also the room where we greet our guests.  I cannot even name all the precious visitors we have had there:  grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, book club girls, our minister, missionaries, neighbors, customers, and others.

The living room is often where ideas are born, discussed, rehashed, debated, rejected, affirmed, and acted upon.

Several years ago a friend gave me a certificate for a “free room makeover consultation.”  This company would come in, look at what you already have around your house and re-do a room with your own stuff.  I picked the living room and she made this room a very stylish room.  She whisked away all the clutter (imagine that!) and placed items so beautifully and artistically that now everything in that room has a very specific place and there is little space for clutter.  This was terrific because now, the “heart of my home”  is very easy to clean and have “company ready.”  This might be something to consider if you like to have guests over to visit, or would like to do so more.

Here is what I would like to know:  Where is the Heart of Your Home?

Happy Homemaking!

Our house is broken up so that we spend equal portions in so many rooms. I’m hoping to knock out a wall and change that 🙂 When I think of the heart of our home, though, I think of the things that I hope my children will remember–things like singing and reading together and sharing the love of Christ.

The heart of our home is the kitchen. If everything is right in the kitchen then everything is right in the rest of the house. 🙂

We are blessed to have a “sun” room on the west side of our home we love having our meals out there, it is where we do much of our school and where we visit with friends as there are three sides of windows to bring in a wonderful breeze and a toasty fireplace for the chilly winter (we are in the artic…Michigan!)

I would have to say its the dinner table where we eat meals together. The dinner table is where we start our day with physical and spiritual food. We often do school at the dinner table. And at the end of the day, Dad joins us there for dinner. The dinner table is where we often play games together. My favorite times is when laughter fills the room.

As a famiily we try to make Christ the center of our home.
But the location in our home where we meet the most for our ‘activities’ is the living room. We have school in there, have family movie night, read, visit with friends, turn into a sick room, and sometimes eat in there.
Thank you for sharing how you made your living room a more inviting space. I think that mine could use a facelift, especially now that I realize how much we use it.
Blessings to you for you wonderful news, and to the young couple.

Christ is the heart of our home too! In our house it’s a toss up between the kitchen and the livingroom. Having gone through many used and on their last leg washer and dryers I know what a blessing it would be to win the contest. Here’s hoping they do.

  7. Jennifer

Praise Jesus!! It is so important for Him to be the heart of our home!

congrats to your daughter, husband and your family. Hope they win!

As so many others have commented, our kitchen, dining room, and living room are the hub of our home. Everyone can be there at one time. You can’t really be a family with everyone is separate places. This is where we congregate and relate. I love it – even if it leaves mess after mess to clean up!

I’d say our kitchen is the heart of our home. We most often eat dinner together there and gather for Bible time & school work. Our oldest comes home from school and does homework there. We play games at the table(which our youngest and Grandma are doing right now!) and sit down to figure things out and have talks.

Jesus lives through us and has blessed us with his love and peace! He makes our family what it should be!

The kitchen is the heart of our home. We gather there for meals, for cooking fabulous treats, for sharing our day, and for enjoying being the family the Lord allows us to be!

Wow what a lot of comments!!!!

    Malia,
I sure enjoy reading your emails and blog. The heart of our home is whereever we are all gathered together, with the LORD to protect us. Congratulations on all your exciting family events coming up–I can’t imagine having a daughter old enough to be getting married, and having a new one join the family in the same year’s time!

  13. Maria

The kitchen table is the physical heart of our home.

  14. Katie

What a sweet mom you are! Blessings!

  15. Sarah

By His grace, Jesus is the heartbeat of this family. We also enjoy sitting around our fireplace for games, stories and just plain family conversations.

  16. Sabrena

I am pulling for you!! What a great gift for your daughter and her husband to be!!

  17. Brenda

Our hub is the LR/Dining Room. When I was growing up, and even when I go to my parents’ home to viist, the gathering place is in the kitchen around the big table. Must be something about those home cooked meals that draw us together there.

  18. Jennifer

The heart of our home is the dining room. That is where we do our devotions, eat meals and have many fun family game nights.

  19. Andrew

    Best wishes to all

The heart of our home is the living room/dining room/kitchen (they’re all connected). Sometimes someone will be playing the piano in the living room while other family members are talking or working at the dining room table while someone else is cooking.

  21. Christi

By God’s grace, Jesus fills our hearts and in our homes the center, or heart, is our kitchen. This is where we nourish each others’ heart as we seek to nourish our physical bodies.

  22. Sara Nicole

    Wishing you all God’s best!

    Love your web sites!

The heart of our home “wordly” speaking is actually movable! We homechurch in the family room down stairs. We talk and chat in the kitchen during meals, We do school all throughout the house depending on the lesson. We read and pray at night in the kids rooms or in the family room. The computer is in the living room – so we gather there. Our love follows us through out the day! I really hope your daughter gets the new set of appliances!! Our family will be praying for yours and baby!

  25. Dottie

The heart of our home has to be the kitchen/dining room. That’s where meals, laughter, silliness, school work, prayers and family fun take place!

  26. Stephanie

    Malia,

This is why i love reading your blog and your emails. You make Christ the center, while sharing the struggles we all have as followers of Him. Please continue to encourage us all in your writing!

  27. Maridel

Jesus said whenever 2 or more are gathered in my name, I am there with them. His presence gives us grace to face each day together as a family. Our family time is spent in our “library” room snuggling on the couch and reading great books together.

  28. Diane

Christ is not only the heart of the home but my Lord and Savior. Without Him I would not have a home or a family. All through my life He has never left me. HE is truly the heart of the world.

  29. Dotti and John

The heart of our home is the kitchen. It seems everyone gravitates there. Come in the back door or the front – wherever you are on your spiritual journey you are welcome.
We will enjoy the new Grandson-in-law and the new grandbaby! Thank you for many blessings!

  30. Mary

Wow, Malia, you’re getting lots and lots of comments. Hope you’re able to win the w/d…that would be a fantastic wedding gift.
Congratulations, too, on your own exciting news!

By God’s grace, Who sent His own Son to die in my stead, I owe every heartbeat and breath to Him. In my human flesh, I often fail to remember that, but His Spirit lovingly and unfailingly calls me back to right thinking and living again. What a Savior!

Malia, I just discovered your website this week and want to thank you for all your hard work and love put into sharing valuable homemaking experience that inspires and educates readers to be the help meets God calls us to be. Jesus is the Heart of our home and our living room/dining room is the gathering place for Bible study, school, meals, games, reading aloud, movie night, and occasional kid campouts. May god bless your daughter’s marriage and your pregnancy.

  32. Cindy

Christ is the heart of our home! Praying God will bless your family as you have blessed ours through your heart for others!

  33. Stephanie

The heart of our home is our family bible reading. I just love to see the light of Christ going into my children’s minds.

  34. C

Thank you so much for the article! Our home’s centre should always be JESUS!

  35. Carrie

I am only a few years removed from being a newly married woman and I remember how wonderful it was to get our hand-me-down washer and dryer (one from either set of parents so they were a little mis-matched but they worked and that’s all that really mattered). I hope you are able to win this for your daughter.

  36. Deborah

This is sooo true! Christ is the center of our home too and it makes it a peaceful and joyful place to live and to bring our foster children into after all the horrors they have lived through in other homes! The living room would be the heart of this home room wise as well. We have a large lounge diner and it is where the kids play, we fellowship with friends, we relax, and it too is the ‘sick’ room in our house! Sofa’s and videos are a great combo when they are sick aren’t they? LOL!

  37. Karen

Jesus is the center of our home…and living within our hearts.

The other “heart of the home” is our kitchen; where comfort food, and comfort is prepared daily!

  38. Chrissy

Great post! I wish you the best in everything.

The heart of our home is our Lord Jesus Christ, who blessed us with a beautiful kitchen and plenty of food — where we all seem to spend the most time! : )

The heart of our home is our living room. Thinking of you and wishing you well!

The heart of our home is love, and you’ll usually find our herd dog right in the middle of the group. Neat website! All the best to your daughter and her husband-to-be. Liz

  41. cayce

wow one getting married and now you crazy good for you

  42. Jennifer

I hope you win! Our house is small and we use each room equally, so I couldn’t really say we have a specific room that is the heart of our home. We’ve talked together around the dining room table, made cookies together in the kitchen, read books together in the living room, had talks while giving baths in the bathroom, had great discussions and soothed babies to sleep in the kid’s bedroom/schoolroom and had wonderful talks together with my husband and I in the late hours in our bedroom. We’ve even learned a lot about working together while cleaning the basement as a family. I can’t choose just one!

  43. Jackie

God blessed me with a wonderful family. Wherever my husband and sons are gathered is the heart of our home.

  44. Jennifer

The physical heart of our home has to be the fireplace room, which is the small part of the L that makes up our living room.

  45. Jeanine

how wonderful that your thoughts turned right to the Lord! when i heard this question (at another blog) i thought of a room. i never thought to take it in the direction of God. i hope you win. praying for your new baby and your daughters marriage!

  46. Jaime Underwood

    Jesus heart of home!

  47. Stephanie

The heart of our home is God and his word….we are new Christians, and this is a learning process.

The “hub” of our home is the kitchen. I spend most of my time here, and this is where the kids gather to do their schoolwork.

    Good luck in the contest.

  48. Sandra

Our favorite room in the house is our dining room. It’s where we eat, play games and where I school our 3 sons. And with windows all around it’s a relaxing place just to sit and appreciate the beautiful mountains God blessed us to live in.

  49. tina

The heart of our home–the Lord Jesus Christ! Which room? Wherever we are at the time, for learning, mealtime, devotionals, rest, and cleaning- every area of our home is blessed by His presence. When I’m washing/drying clothes? Absolutely for me that is a bit of private time! Thank you Malia and congratulations to your entire family.

  50. Hannah

the heart of our home is where ever we’re all together.
