Where is the Heart of Your Home

Most of my readers know by now that the heart of our home is the culmination of each member’s identity in Christ.  If each and every member of our home is living a life to be pleasing to the Lord, then the home will be a pleasant place, a place where we love one another, put one another’s interests ahead of ourselves, and are a testimony to the world of what a life filled with Christ’s love can do.  That, simply put is the heart of our home.

Now, from a worldly viewpoint, the other heart of our home is the living room, our “hub” so to speak.  Here is where we greet one another, snuggle on the couch to read books together, gather with our church family, have family discussions, and with our home businesses, we often have our laptops in there working while all the evening’s activities are going on around us.  Our living room is also the “sick room”.  When someone gets sick, the couch is the place they lay with their pillow and blankie so that they can be lovingly tended to by others, even as we go about our daily work.

This is also the room where we greet our guests.  I cannot even name all the precious visitors we have had there:  grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, book club girls, our minister, missionaries, neighbors, customers, and others.

The living room is often where ideas are born, discussed, rehashed, debated, rejected, affirmed, and acted upon.

Several years ago a friend gave me a certificate for a “free room makeover consultation.”  This company would come in, look at what you already have around your house and re-do a room with your own stuff.  I picked the living room and she made this room a very stylish room.  She whisked away all the clutter (imagine that!) and placed items so beautifully and artistically that now everything in that room has a very specific place and there is little space for clutter.  This was terrific because now, the “heart of my home”  is very easy to clean and have “company ready.”  This might be something to consider if you like to have guests over to visit, or would like to do so more.

Here is what I would like to know:  Where is the Heart of Your Home?

Happy Homemaking!

I agree 100% that the heart of our home is Christ.

Physically speaking, our kitchen is more the heart of our home. That’s where we end up schooling…making meals…and sitting down for coffee and a chat with drop-in guests. Our living room is now so small that we don’t have room for coffee tables or end tables where we can put beverages, but we do have a 14-person kitchen table…so that’s where we usually end up when we have company that involves eating or drinking. 🙂

Hope that Christina and Jonathan will end up with that washer/dryer!

wow, what a blessing! I would love a set like that, but would love to see them get it even more 🙂

The heart of my home is my kitchen – All of the meals are prepared there. It’s the first room you enter when you come inside. It’s where the mail pile is! The food and drinks are there! We can sit and eat or entertain, hang out with a friend, read a magazine or watch the birds outside. It’s also the perfect floor for rolling balls with my son!

The Heart of our Home is the LR/Dining Room.

  5. Nancy

The heart of our home is the living room. It’s such a cozy place and is often filled with laughter. Always makes coming home so sweet!

  6. Anna Morgan

The heart of our home is the LR/DR. We are in the living room when relaxing and although we have a schoolroom, we prefer to do schoolwork around our spacious kitchen table (seats 10)!

What a blessing it is to a young couple who can not afford a washer and dryer. I would love to have the set but the young couple needs it even mor. My kitchen is the room you come into. That is where my daughter got her tricycle, bicycle, mail piled up and that is where we eat most of the time instead of the dining room.

The heart of our home is the kitchen. The family gathers in the kitchen to eat, play games, read, use the computer, etc. The kitchen is our classroom.

What a great contest! And what a wonderful wedding gift!

  10. Kathryn Aqua

I think the kitchen is the heart of my home also, but it is hard to say. I know it is the hardest room to keep clean! That must say something about how we use it.

I hope you win the washer and dryer! And blessings to your children on their marriage!

After I read your articles,Malia, I always want to improve my life and renew my dedication to my family, encouraging them in loving one another and serving the LORD with gladness.

The heart of our home would be a “Dining Room and Den” combination. We start out at the dining table, with some migrating to the den, and some of us chasing the grandchildren around. I have a goal to get some really comfortable chairs for the dining table — that might prolong our mealtime conversations. All the best to the ‘soon to be’ bride and groom.

The HEART of our home is Jesus Christ… The central area of all our gatherings is the Living Room and Dinning Room…. the kids, our guests, the meals, the board games, the chats, etc. Praying you will be able to be a blessing to your daughter and soon to be son-in-law!
    Blessings!!

The heart of our home is the living room. I agree that it feels so nice when it is clutter free. I’d love to have it that way always, I’m just not sure how to achieve that since we’d have to move a lot of stuff that we use daily to another area of the house.

  14. Kim

Cool washer and dryer plan! Blessings!

  15. Viorica Bash

Kitchen and Living Room. We do school in there, cook, eat, work on the computer. And we like to sit on the couch in the LR where we can relax by watching a show and folding laundry or working on a craft project.

  16. Monica Satterly

Malia, the heart of our home would be the living room. That is where we gather and spend time together as a family. I like the idea of a makeover using what we already have. I’ll have to check into that! Congratulations to your daughter, I hope she wins!

  17. jessica

heart of our home is Christ. Our entire back of our house is open so I love that we can flow from kitchen to family room and see everyone inbetween.

  18. Bonnie

I really need a remodel of my living room too! It’s a 22 foot long room and it feels crowded!

  21. Rhonda

Where is the heart of our home?
In the living room ALL together and on Mom and Dad’s bed Where our kids
listen to stories that we read to them.

  22. LaVonda H

We have no one place in our home where we all congregate on a regular basis, so that place must be in our hearts. My hope, prayer, desire and maybe even goal is to make Christ the heart of our home. Without Him, the ‘place’ doesn’t matter.

  23. Stephanie

What a great contest! The heart of our home is our kitchen. It’s where everything goes on.

  24. Marie

I’ve shared your living room with you, and it is a wonderful place! I would love to have a little part in helping Christina and Jonathan win this wonderful set of appliances!! Congrats and all the best to them in their marriage!
    Marie

  25. Barbie

I love the fact you are blessing your daughter and her future husband! Our kitchen seems to be the heart of our home.

  26. Becky Rucker

The heart of my home is often my bedroom. Our family piles on the bed at night to discuss the day, to cuddle, to share. We watched movies together from the bed and have our popcorn. Even the dogs will pile on with us at times. The occasional pillow fight might break out as well. The memories of our family time together in the evenings is priceless.

  27. Kristin Tibbs

The “heart’ of our home is Jesus Christ. The “hub” of our home is the dining room. Our dining room table is not only for family meals, but also for family meetings, family prayer, school, art projects, and occasionally a secret hide out when draped with a couple of sheets!
I hope you win the appliances for your daughter and new son-in-law!

Hey Malia: I hope I am doing this right and that you win the washer and dryer. Please let me know if I did everything ok. Your website is totally awesome!!! You Rock!!! I can’t beleive that Tina is getting married next month!!!! It is so cool having David in my Pre-K class. I hope he likes it, he seemed like he would rather just be playing, but then again, wouldn’t most boys? even grown ones? Anyways, this is fun!!! Keep me posted on everything.

If I leave more than one comment does that count towards the prize? Why does it say Ten minus five equals at the bottom of this? Is this like an e-mail or are other people reading it besides you?

I believe the heart of our home is also the Living room. It is where we as a family sit and listen to books on CD and do projects as we talk, where we greet and entertain guests, and probably the most inviting room of our home!! Probably the least cluttered too — I’d like to think.
So excited for Tina & Jonathan!!
My step-son gets married this coming Sat. 9/26 — too Cool!!

  31. Vicki

Although the kitchen is likely the heart of our home, we recently made a “reading nook” in our “great room” and we often find ourselves all huddled in this area to just visit with each other. I think its appeal has to do with the closeness of the furniture and the fact that every morning there are three of us warming up the seats as we use them for our “tent of meeting” time with the Lord. His presence is clearly felt whenever we sit down in that area.

  32. Katrina

The heart of my home is the kitchen, everyone collects there even when it is not mealtime. I am constantly having to clear clutter out of the kitchen just to have a meal at the table. best wishes to the soon-to-be-newlyweds…

  33. Teri

Very good article, Malia! I agree. Also I hope you win!

  34. Annette

Nice article, Malia! You are a blessing to the homeschool world! I hope you win the contest 🙂

  35. Erin

The heart of our home is our LR/DR. This is where everyone hangs out, does homework, watches TV, trains the dogs, surfs on the computer–you name it! Good luck!

  36. Ruth Ann

The living room is definitely the heart of our home. We are always gathering there for seemingly everything— but most importantly, our family prayer times. Since our recent move this summer, I especially love our new living room, where I definitely feel an extra sense of God’s presence, mostly because of the view and the way it just feels. By the way, give our congrats to Christina and Jonathan— WOW!! 🙂

  37. dV

    🙂 best wishes!

  38. Becky

The heart of our home would be the living room. We do play games and eat in the dining room, but the living room would be the heart of our home. We communicate with one another, watch television, cuddle, read books, watch football/baseball/ basketball games (can you tell I am the only women in my house), entertain guests, plan dinners, review homework and materials covered and many other things. We have a prayer space in the living room and pictures of our family and friends that give this room a more cozy and welcoming feeling.
Congrats to the soon to be newlyweds. When Trey and I got married we got a washer and dryer as a weeding gift from his grandparents and it was truly a blessing because it was two less things we had to worry about getting for our new home.

  39. Debbie

Our kitchen is the heart of our home. I love to have everyone home for a meal together. (including our college students!) It is always a blessing when we can all be there sitting at the table and catch up with one another’s lives.

  40. Rachel

The people are what makes me love my home. Taking time to talk with my sisters, and parents is the best part about our home, I will miss it when we all grow up and move away.

  41. Rebecca : )

    Yay Christina!

  42. Megan

The heart of our home is also the living room…we do just about everything there, including eat dinner! Hope you win!

  43. Debra

    Christ!

  44. Jill S.

The heart of our home is our living room where we spend time reading. I love seeing my kids curled up in a comfy chair and a big pile of books. Or watching my husband read to them before bed–precious memories. Hoping you’ll win.

  45. Kirsten Lucas

The Heart of our Home is our master bedroom. Daily we will snuggle up together in our big bed and read a good book together, watch a movie, listen to CD’s, do devotions, and just enjoy each other’s company!
We are blessed to have 6 kiddos and 1 on the way, but with that many also comes A LOT of dirty laundry, so almost as much time is spent in our laundry room as anywhere else in our home!
May God bless Christina and Jonathon as the start a new life together, and may it be full of God’s richest blessings- CHILDREN! 🙂

  46. Betty

The place where we spend most of our time is in our livingroom/kitchen (one huge room). I actually feel like I spend my entire day in the kitchen but that’s another topic. 🙂

  47. Jenni

    Congratulations on you News!!!

And thank you for always sharing your heart!

  48. Melissa

Christ is the heart of our home also!!

  49. Debbie

The LR is the heart of our home, the major hub of our traffic!

  50. Becky

Congratulations on the upcoming wedding. How exciting!
A new home to share Christ from!
