And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should go and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy!
Nehemiah 13:22
Once again, cleaning is in the air. Before you grab your boxes and bags and start throwing things away, check out the needs of church first. Is there a clothing closet for the poor? Is there a food pantry? Does the parish office need supplies or your unused fax machine gathering dust? Are tools needed for parish improvements or repairs? Then, as you do your cleaning, mark boxes with the appropriate charity and go to work! Cleaning your closets and your home can really bless others. It motivates you when you know your cast-offs are meeting the needs of your local church and fellow parishioners.
For those items that the church cannot accept, consider selling them on consignment or having a yard sale and donating the profits to the church. Children can set up a lemonade or soda stand and donate their profits as well. Make giving part of your cleaning spree this year!
